Women Over 40 Rock!
Five ways women over 40 have a leadership advantage
Hi. I’m Bonnie Marcus. Welcome to my weekly newsletter, Own Your Ambition, where I share my tips and strategies on how women can successfully navigate today’s complex work environment.
As a former CEO who made it to the C Suite from an entry level, I’ve learned from my many experiences on how to best position yourself to be visible and credible, stand in your power and honor your ambition with integrity.
This week’s newsletter is about celebrating women over 40 and what we bring to the workplace every day despite the challenges of gender bias and ageism.
Here’s to women 40+!!! We have power and it’s time to recognize and honor it.
In 2019, I wrote the book, Not Done Yet! How Women over 50 Regain Their Confidence and Claim Workplace Power. At the time, I had a several coaching clients at this age who were marginalized, pushed aside, and felt a constant fear of losing their jobs due to their age. Their experiences led me to do extensive research on what I labeled ‘gendered ageism’. The Not Done Yet! book offers advice on how to own your experience, wisdom, your value, and stand in your power….at any age.
At present, I am very much aware of another emerging trend, and that trend has inspired me to write this newsletter this week.
What I am experiencing with my readers on Substack is a power surge of women 40 and beyond who refuse to accept they are ‘less than’ due to their age. In fact, they are acknowledging how their age benefits their careers and personal lives.
When I look back on my career, I recognize the power surge that occurred for me during this time. I became CEO of a national company just a couple of days shy of my 50th birthday. I stepped into my full power. I didn’t let my age hold me back.
It’s important to point out, however, that somewhere along the way, women were taught a lie:
That power and potential peak in your 20s and 30s, and everything after that is a slow decline. Bullshit!
The truth is the opposite.
Let’s be clear:
Your 40s and beyond are often your strongest, clearest, and most strategically powerful career years—not because of technical skills, credentials, or titles (though you may have plenty), but because of something far more valuable:
Your emotional intelligence, lived experience, and the hard-earned ability to understand people, navigate complexity, and lead with wisdom.
These qualities don’t fade with age.
They sharpen!
And they give women over 40 a leadership advantage that is unmatched, and it’s time we own it!
Here are 5 ways women over 40 have a leadership advantage:
Emotional Intelligence as a Strategic Power
Women over 40 have often spent decades reading the room—at work, at home, in relationships, in negotiations, in crises.
You’ve seen it all. You’ve paid attention. You’ve learned to pick up on tone, tension, hesitation, energy shifts, and the unspoken subtext that shapes outcomes.
You’ve developed a pattern recognition built over years of real interactions.
And in leadership, that translates into:
stronger influence
more trust
better decision-making
smoother conflict resolution
greater political savvy
When a leader can anticipate reactions, understand motivations, and guide emotions without suppressing truth, it creates an environment where people follow—not because they have to, but because they choose to.
This is not softness.
This is power.
Experience Gives You What Younger Leaders Don’t Have Yet
You can’t rush maturity.
You can’t shortcut wisdom.
And you cannot fake steadiness under pressure.
Women in their 40s and beyond hold:
context from past careers, organizations, and leaders
a clear understanding of what matters and what doesn’t
the ability to spot red flags faster
a refined internal compass
insight shaped by successes and failures, large and small
This experience becomes a strategic advantage in environments where complexity is the norm (today’s workplace).
When others panic, you stay grounded.
When others overreact, you assess.
When others assume, you observe.
When others stall, you move with intention.
You don’t crumble at the first sign of challenge because you’ve lived through enough to know:
this is solvable.
this is temporary.
this is information.
You’ve earned confidence from your experience.
You Understand People—and That’s a Leadership Differentiator
Workplaces run on relationships, which is why I continually stress the importance of political savvy to understand the people dynamics.
People execute strategy.
By 40+, most women have developed a deep capacity to understand human behavior.
You know the difference between insecurity and aggression.
Between misalignment and resistance.
Between misunderstanding and disrespect.
Between communication gaps and political maneuvering.
This makes you exceptionally strong at:
managing up with clarity and confidence
navigating difficult personalities
aligning cross-functional teams
building trust quickly
resolving tension without burning bridges
advancing strategy through smart relationships
This isn’t people-pleasing.
It’s people-understanding (political savvy), which is one of the most valuable leadership capabilities there is.
Your Emotional Regulation Is a Superpower
We are often told to “manage our emotions,” but the truth is that women over 40 are typically the most emotionally skilled leaders in the room.
Because of the life you’ve lived.
Life teaches you grounding.
Life teaches you discernment.
Life teaches you when to speak and when to pause.
Life teaches you how to choose strategy over impulse.
This emotional regulation becomes your executive presence:
you project calm authority
you diffuse tension without diminishing your message
you create clarity when others create chaos
you respond instead of react
you hold boundaries with confidence
Emotional regulation is NOT about being quiet or agreeable.
It’s about being centered, powerful, and intentional.
And women over 40 often excel at it because we’ve spent decades in real emotional situations—professionally and personally.
Your Story Is Your Power
Every challenge you’ve weathered, every reinvention you’ve lived through, every time you rebuilt your career—these weren’t setbacks.
It was training.
Women over 40 bring:
a deep understanding of boundaries
clarity about their values
a sharper ability to say no
resilience after losses
perspective after detours
courage after years of advocating for themselves and others
You don’t lead from theory.
You lead from truth.
Your story—your failures, triumphs, pivots, heartbreaks, reinventions—all contribute to your leadership.
It makes you more empathetic, more decisive, and more human.
And in today’s workplace, human leaders outperform all others.
The Important Message: Your value isn’t diminishing. It’s compounding!
Your emotional intelligence makes you insightful.
Your experience makes you strategic.
Your presence makes you credible.
Your resilience makes you influential.
Your story makes you powerful.
You don’t need to compete with your younger self.
You’ve surpassed her.
You’re not entering the “later” stage of your career.
You’re entering the strongest, most self-assured, politically savvy, emotionally intelligent, powerful era of your leadership.
This is your advantage.
This is your leverage.
This is your moment.
And you’ve earned every bit of it.
Keep it up! You’re Not Done Yet!

Very true. Maturity delivers the kind of perspective that enables success on any scale.
