Networking is a big part of my day job and something I also facilitate for others, making introductions at events, connecting like-minded people offline and suggesting people connect if I can see opportunities or alignments for them. It’s literally my job. As a result I end up with endless contacts but as you say, you have to put the time and energy into these relationships, as with all others.
My best advice for attending large events is to get a hold of the attendees list ahead of time (if you can), reach out to those who you want to connect with, and try to set up meetings during the conference. It's a great way to be strategic and not waste time. Even if you end up meeting with just a handful of people, those are the relationships you will most likely want to nurture.
